3 Person Wheelbarrow Race

A three-person race where two carriers steer a human wheelbarrow while keeping a shared three-ball cascade going.

Game Description

Teams consist of three players. One player is the human wheelbarrow and supports themselves on their hands. The other two players each hold one of the wheelbarrow player's legs.

While steering the wheelbarrow toward the finish line, the two standing players keep a shared three-ball cascade going between them. The team must move as a unit without dropping the balls or letting the wheelbarrow position collapse. The fastest clean team wins.

Setup

  • Mark a short, straight course with a start and finish line.
  • Form teams of three.
  • Let each team test the wheelbarrow position before adding the juggling pattern.
  • Start teams one at a time, in lanes, or in heats depending on available space.

Rules

  1. The wheelbarrow player starts in hand support while the two carriers hold one leg each.
  2. The carriers begin the shared three-ball cascade.
  3. On the signal, the team moves toward the finish line while keeping the cascade active.
  4. A team must restart or is out if the balls drop, the wheelbarrow player collapses, a carrier lets go, or the team leaves the lane.
  5. The fastest clean run wins.

Variations

  • Shorten the course for younger or less fit groups.
  • Allow a one-ball or two-ball exchange before attempting a full three-ball cascade.
  • Use a distance challenge instead of a race: how far can the team travel cleanly?
  • Let team members rotate roles after each round.

Safety Notes

Keep the course short and use a soft, clean surface. Stop immediately if wrists, shoulders or backs are overloaded. Do not allow teams to race side by side unless lanes are wide enough to prevent collisions.
