Ball Chaos
Short Description
A name and ball game where fixed throwing sequences with multiple ball colors become increasingly complex.
Group Size: 5 to 15 players
Difficulty: Easy to difficult (depending on the number of balls in play)
Materials: Balls (several of the same color)
Game Duration: Approx. 10 minutes
Game Description:¶
In this game, all players stand in a circle. If the players don't know each other's names at all, the following introductory round is recommended: The game leader starts by saying their name aloud, then passes a ball to someone in the circle. It's best to make clear eye contact before throwing and to throw the ball in an arc from below. The game leader then sits down or places their hand on their head. This is simply to show that they have already had their turn. The person who now has the ball continues exactly as the game leader did, going around the circle. The last person throws the ball back to the game leader. Now that the order is clear, the sitting down/hand-on-head action can be omitted, and the sequence can be practiced. Don't forget to say the names of the other players! Once this is reasonably secure, a new sequence can be established. This is done using the same principle as above, but now you name the person you want to receive the ball, instead of saying your own name. Alternatively, the old sequence can be maintained, and only the naming convention can be changed. Once the sequence is well-practiced, the game leader can introduce multiple balls of the same color into the circle one after another.
Variations:¶
This is where the game really gets going. The game leader can introduce another color, and the ball, or later the balls, of this color are thrown backward in the established sequence. Another ball of a different color can simply be thrown clockwise, and yet another ball of a different color can be thrown counter-clockwise. Now there are four different colors, and as many balls of each as the group can handle. To take it to the next level, the circle is broken up, and all players move freely around the room! Now, players must know which ball belongs to whom!
