Beigoma 10-Minute Modification Game
Brief Description
A maker-style Beigoma game where players have a short timed phase to modify a top before testing its spin or match performance.
Group Size: 2-20 people
Difficulty: Hard
Materials: Beigoma, strings, playing floor, files, sandpaper, safety equipment, timer
Duration: 20-45 minutes
Game Description:¶
The 10-Minute Modification Game turns Beigoma tuning into a timed challenge. Players have a short time window to improve a top, usually with the goal of making a stronger Riki-goma: a top that spins for a long time.
Before the timed phase starts, explain the safety rules and the goal of the modification. Then start a 10-minute timer. Players work on their tops using files or sandpaper. When time is over, the tops are tested.
Testing can happen in several ways:
- longest single spin
- best of three Riki attempts
- short one-on-one Riki tournament
- comparison before and after modification
Rules:¶
- Only use tools that the facilitator can supervise safely.
- Stop all modification when the timer ends.
- Clean metal dust from the table and hands before play resumes.
- Use the same test method for all players.
Variants:¶
Run the game in pairs, with one person modifying and one person documenting changes.
For younger groups, replace metal filing with observation, decoration, or comparison of pre-modified tops.
Notes:¶
This activity is more technical than most Beigoma games. It needs supervision, safe tool handling, and realistic expectations. Tokyo Beigoma emphasizes that making a strong Riki-goma takes technique and experience; the short format is a challenge, not a guarantee of success.
