Challenge the Master

Short Description

A Beigoma challenge format where players earn points by defeating experienced masters in repeated attempts.

Group Size: 4-40 people
Difficulty: Easy
Materials: Beigoma, strings, playing surfaces, point cards, optional prize tops
Duration: 15-60 minutes

Game Description:

"Challenge the Master" is an open-ended challenge format. Several experienced players act as Beigoma masters. Other participants challenge them one after another, collecting points when they win.

This format is well-suited for public events, as players can join at different times, return for more attempts, and work towards a visible goal.

Select multiple masters. Ideally, these should be experienced players or individuals who have won previous Beigoma rounds. Prepare point cards for the participants.

If prizes are being used, set the point threshold in advance. Tokyo Beigoma describes a format where 20 collected points can be exchanged for a standard Beigoma.

Participants challenge one master at a time. If the participant wins, points are recorded on their card. Players can accumulate points over multiple attempts or sessions. When a player reaches the agreed-upon threshold, they receive the agreed-upon reward.

Scoring:

A possible scoring model:

  • Win by Hajiki: 2 points
  • Win by Riki: 1 point
  • Draw or loss: 0 points

Adjust scoring based on the event and skill level.

Variations:

Use simpler masters for children or first-time players, and more difficult masters for advanced players.

Allow for a beginner bonus, such as one point for a clean landing and a stable spin against a master.

Notes:

This format depends on the attitude of the masters. They should create challenge and excitement without making beginners feel excluded.
