Shark and Fish
Brief Description
A running game where fish must get past sharks, and caught fish become seaweed.
Group Size: 10+ participants
Difficulty: Simple
Materials: None
Duration: Approx. 5 minutes
Game Description:¶
One person is chosen to be the shark. In larger groups or with larger playing areas (e.g., an entire gymnasium), there can be two or three sharks. The shark(s) stand on one side of the playing area, and all other players, the little fish, stand on the other side. The shark(s) then call out, "Shark!" and the fish call back, "Fish!" This signals the start of the game. The fish try to reach the shark's side of the playing area. While doing so, the shark(s) try to tag the fish. However, a shark may never move back towards their starting side. The fish can move back, but the shark can only move forward or sideways. If a fish makes it across the line where the shark(s) started, they are safe. If a little fish is tagged by a shark, they must sit down exactly where they were tagged and become seaweed. Important: Seaweed is rooted in place and cannot move, but they can catch little fish using their long seaweed fronds (arms). If a piece of seaweed tags a fish, that fish also becomes seaweed, right where the seaweed tagged them.
