I Ride the Train

Brief Description

A name and seat-swapping game in a circle of chairs, where an empty seat moves around through calls and shifting.

Group Size: 10 to 30 participants
Difficulty: Medium
Materials: One sturdy chair without armrests for each participant
Game Duration: Flexible

Game Description:

Participants sit in a circle of chairs. Any player can start by standing up and moving to the center of the circle, leaving one seat empty. The game then begins: The player sitting to the left of the empty seat quickly slides to the right into that seat and says, "I'm going." The next player, now sitting to the left of the newly vacated seat, slides into it and says, "I'm coming along." The third player also slides over and says, "I'm going black." The fourth player slides as well and calls out the name of a player sitting in the circle, who then takes the empty seat. The whole process then restarts with the newly vacated chair! While the others are sliding around the circle, the player standing in the middle tries to grab a seat and sit down in the empty one. It's important that once the fourth player calls a name, that seat is considered taken, even if the named player hasn't sat down yet.
